SSC Tuatara Sets NEW WORLD RECORD! Controversy Closed at 282.9mph

The SSC Tuatara is now the fastest car in the world! Following the controversy of the first 331mph run, SSC have returned to action and set a two-way average speed of 282.9mph at the Space Shuttle Landing Facility in Florida, eclipsing the previous record of the Koenigsegg Agera RS.
In October 2020, the SSC Tuatara took to a stretch of tarmac in Nevada to attempt a maximum speed run, which was released through video to be 331mph in one direction, and 301mph in the other, for a record shattering 316mph average. This feat was mind blowing but the discussed started soon thereafter as the video itself raised many questions as to whether what it showed matched what was being claimed.
These varied from the direct comparison to the previous record holding run by the Koenigsegg Agera RS on the exact same stretch which appeared to travel between known fixed medians on the road in less time, to questions over the gearbox within the car and whether it would have been possible to reach such a speed in 6th gear. With other topics raised from the tyre situation, to the painted lines on the road, no clear data and supporting video came forward and therefore Jerod Shelby announced that SSC would return to give it another shot.
In the months that have followed, SSC have undertaken a number of testing days with the Tuatara to really put it through the paces and build up the speed in the chase for a new world record. After numerous hurdles, that objective was met on 17th January, 2021 at Space Florida's Landing Launch Facility with Johnny Böhmer Proving Grounds, being driven by Larry Caplin, the owner of Tuatara #001. The exact run details for the two-way average of 282.9mph recorded by a 100Hz VBOX 3i system are as follows:
Northbound 279.7mph @ 14:38:09 PM local time
Southbound 286.1mph @ 15:28:51 PM local time
The full videos can be found with Driven Plus:
There was never a question that the SSC Tuatara is an immensely capable car and was likely to be able to break the previous record, and even with that objective now met, the question becomes where is the limit given the clear acceleration the car was still matching when the markers for the breaking zone were reached. It is however fantastic and hugely respect worthy to SSC that they have gone out to show exactly what it can do and have made that happen.

  • SSC have set a new world record! With a two-way average speed at 282.9mph, the Tuatara has certainly demonstrated immense capability. With the same mechanical setup and gearbox as the first run, what do you make of the latest news? Congratulations to SSC on this huge achievement!

  • The sad part imho is this, you blew it the first time around, there is no excuse in the whole world good enough to explain away the first run and those magic numbers, none! Way too much spooky stuff around this, riddles hidden in all kinds of agendas, lack of this or that but sure, those fanboys who want to wave the flag of the origin of the nation of the builder go ahead... As if that would by chance make you proud of what exactly, have got nothing to do with you so just stupid. I am not saying bury them, I am saying I don't trust obvious liars, or where facts tend to lean sketchy which they are here. Those with nothing to hide would make a huge fuss of it after being made fun of online by everyone, it is human psychology to want to go to all lengths to show it was real first time around but now you lack a huge margin of that claimed speed yet somehow manage to squeeze out a couple miles on the previous record setter which by the way don't seem shy about the achievements at all??? I mean maybe you did it and if so congrats, but by the charades you took away trust forever and imho you must invite people not tied to you in any way, shape or form and allow them access, better have them operate all measuring equipment? Sad it come to this but what happen after crazy bold statements that low grade math can show is not very likely at all, easy to fool those dwellers spitting HP yet do not even understand torque at all, forget about the steel wall you must penetrate in front of the car and drag strong arming it at those speeds.

Yeah well done on the record but 282.9 nowhere near 304.7 never mind 331. They got attention kept saying it was legit then returned the record once enough interest was raised, then tried again initially it was we're faster than Bugatti was deliberate bs and it worked.

My guess is they will hit something like 300-311 mph because of runway limitations, then when some other manufacturer tries to break it *(cough cough Jesko Absolut)* they will go for a final attempt where they reach the highest possible speed (probably in Nevada) and hopefully end this whole production-car top speed record thing because things are getting out of control.

And for some reason Hennessey doesn't want the Venom F5 to be a production car, as they're only building 24 units... not sure why, maybe to avoid having to pass emissions or crash testing, or any fees, no idea.

    • @Kostas Albanidis I don't know man, it's kinda late but that doesn't make no sense to me right now. 1. Yes, he said he couldn't verify the first run with 300+ mph. What is questionable about this? 2. It was wired with second party stuff, GPS and so on. It happened and the record was aborted at 250 mph, so what? 3. 286 on 1.9 miles is just as impressive. Koenigsegg had 3.8 miles and was 5 mph slower. 4. Racing driver isn't needed on runway, and you can't prevent the OWNER from driving his own car. 5. Not that much needed. They will be back very soon, they still believe they can hit 300 there. Full power wasn't used yet, to keep the driver comfortable. 6. I don't think they needed publicity. This did more harm than anything. Orders were cancelled because of this.

      SuperGeronimo999SuperGeronimo999Acum 18 Zile
    • @SuperGeronimo999 I truly believe this is a car than can do wonders... I find it hard though to believe that they "did not verify" ( Shelby's words not mine ) the 300+ record at the first attempt. I find it hard to believe also that even when the car was wired "like a Christmas tree" ( Robert Mitchel's words not mine ) they did not ...see the overheat and burned 2 plug sparks on the second attempt. And now they do 20+ LESS ( than the 300+ advertised... ) and I should ...congratulate them because NOW they are honest? With no *racing driver* because the ...owner being a - nothing personal with doctors here - can run the record attempt? Yes I know its a ...straight line just change gears at the correct time and you are done. But... Is it like this really? Give them time ( 1 or 2 more years ) and I am sure they will make the 300 mph record. I believe they wanted publicity ( maybe they are short on money? ) and they thought they could pull such a stun. Well, we got ROworld and Smhee and Mitchel...

At that speed you are nearly moving 5 miles a minute, which the runway is only 3.2 miles long. Then you have to figure in the space it would require to stop. I believe the tuatara is more than capable of hitting the 316mph avg if they had a long enough road.

    MacXpert74MacXpert74Acum 21 o Zi
    • Shutting public highways can take a shit ton of time. And the driver not being professional so they didn't wanna risk his life. Thus they had limited options. They can either wait up to 1 years to shut the highway down, or go for the runway. So they had to use the only runway suitable and long enough in the US for the run, which is the Kennedy Space Center which is used to test many supercars/hypercars as well for aerodynamical testing/top speed testing, to make the driver feel more safe, etc etc. Hope you got it.

  • I don’t understand how you call this a top speed record run when the car was not giving a road to actually achieve it’s top speed when it’s not accelerating anymore. Based on the return run acceleration we still saw at 286 mph, 300 mph is absolutely within reach (and SSC has claimed that to be the case). Now we wait for Hennessey's F5 to step up on the top speed record podium.

    • It's just not reliable enough. In the very first ("faked") run, it's very likely that the car overheated. It wasn't even close to this speed, despite having a much longer road. Koenigsegg had their record there in 3.8 miles. Tuatara now beat it in only 2.3 miles. This shows that something went very wrong in the first run. But thats not all. In December they tried a second run, at the airfield above. Car overheated again, they still ran it to 250 mph and it eventually broke two cylinders. In the run above, they massively reduced boost (300 less hp) - the only time it ran on full power, was in the last gear on the second run, where it kept speeding. Now they want to fix these issues somehow. They believe they can run 300 on this airfield. Makes you wonder what is possible at the longer Route 160. But one step after another. Hennessey's F5 will be interesting too. They will do it at the very same airfield. In the first half of this year. Who will be first to do it? Or is it going to be the Jesko even?

  • The incoming Bugatti Chiron Super Sport 300+, due for delivery summer 2021 is set to become the fastest production car, which will be a bit sad for SSC and their incredible efforts, from such a tiny company to produce such a beautiful car that reached almost 283mph on an average speed run. Some are saying the production version of the Bugatti will exceed the previous 304.7mph of the prototype model as that was full of electronic timing gear and a roll cage. If so, the Bugatti Chiron Super Sport 300+ might be at least 22mph+ faster than the newly announced SSC Tuatara, and take the world record in as little as 6 months. No doubt the Bugatti itself with then be trumped by something like the Koenigsegg Jesko Absolut. 2021 looks like an exciting year for hypercars and top speed records being broken.

    • Bugatti won't ever be the fastest, because they only ran in one direction. It can't handle doing it twice. They also had like five times the space. Lets see them run this speed on 2.3 miles or invite SSC over to their track. But maybe this isn't even needed since SSC was driving with low boost (300 hp less) except for the last gear in the second run. They still believe they can beat 300 mph on this 2.3 miles strip. Makes you wonder what is possible if they return to Route 160. All that being said, Bugatti won't do any further top speed runs anyways. They now focus on lap times with the Bolide. Next up is not the Jesko but Hennessey's F5. They will also drive here in the next few months.

  • Most of those who really comment have not even given themselves the task of reviewing and watching the videos and analyzes of the 3 attempts of SSC TAUTARA, what really proves the last certified attempt, is that if they were right about SSC since the beginning, the vehicle is capable of going at 300 mph or more, the test was done on a shorter track, the driver is not a professional pilot and the engine power has decreased; the fact that some people do not believe it does not make it any less true, and the only thing that must be rescued is the transparency of SSC and the value of the owner of TAUTARA, that is the true hero. Let's think a little and 99.9% of those who comment here will not be able to do this anywhere ... there was never a contradiction, Greetings

  • How many have they made? Isn't this a production car speed record? What determines a production car in terms of volume? If Ford made a production run of two cars I'm pretty sure they could exceed 300mph.

    • 3 or more (white, yellow, black) Not yet, but 100 cars are planned by SSC 25 cars will have to be build at the time of the record (like Agera RS, they did it the month the last 25th car was shipped) Ford has zero models to reach that speed. But in theory everyone could do it.

      SuperGeronimo999SuperGeronimo999Acum 23 Zile
  • That’s a new record? Didn’t Bugatti build a specific version of the Chiron that went 304 mph a while back? How is this a record 🤔. Still far from 331 mph. They only did this because they got caught...sloppy. Still not the fastest it can go? Isn’t that the point of a top speed run? Sloppy sloppy sloppy.

    • Well, first of all the Bugatti was no production car, but a prototype which is longer than the ordinary Chiron. The Tuatara is a production car, owned by a dentist (who also drove the record) and also Bugatti didn't run in two directions, which is mandatory. Otherwise i could beat the record with my Civic, downhill from Mount Everest. Plus, keep in mind this was done in just 2.3 miles. Previous record was the Agera RS, which took 3.8 miles. And yes, not the fastest it can go, but still broke the record. Not everyone has an infinite loop of a track in their backyard like Bugatti does.

    • @Skander Seyhi Only done it in one direction which isn't valid. Otherwise i can run my Honda downhill from Mount Everest and hit 320 mph. Not impressed either way, since it didn't do it from a standing start, but a rolling start with a 5.5 mile straight and a loop to slow down. Tuatara did it from standing position in 2.3 miles, came to a halt in 1 mile and did the same again in other direction. Chiron would never be able to do this without blowing their tires. Previous record was Koenigsegg Agera RS.

I’m not a f a n of any lEgacy media but I hope one day all these you tubers get together and solve real problems, not breaking out all the m a t h s to solve a problem with a car 99.9% will never own. Hats off to Shelby for inviting these tarmac trolls to the show. This car is still cool, but an actual Tuatara is cooler imo.

  • Why does everyone overcomplicating things? Why dont they just put that small commonly-used Racelogic performancebox and a phone with this dragy running on a rail, fix a Gopro on the same rail, tighten it so shaking will be sorted and run the car so the video had independent live speedos? Whats so hard about that when trillions of other youtubers can do that with more simplified gear? I simply guess even those non-professional devices can handle such speeds.

  • I know that there is alot of hate from people, because the car did not reach 330 like it did before. But lets take a look at what we just saw We saw an american company beat a well respected Hypercar manufacture, koenigsegg. Though the 1st attempt was faked we should not let that stop people from saying wow, America really has done it. Their 1st car the ultimate aero was critizised for being like a diablo, but this car is all american. The car looks nothing like any other car, unlike other cars like the venom gt. Also, this has a power weight ratio better than a One:1, which is one hp per Pound, not kilo like the one:1. This is considered the holy grail that ssc now holds the record to, one that is overlooked but is very important. This was all SSC, this car was the thing we have been waiting for and now that it faster than koenigsegg, we should not look at the past, but look at what happened now. Don't even think about saying "wElL bUgAtTi wAs fAsTeR" as that that was a one way test with a modded chiron. This was all new, did BOTH ways, and this is a new king I cant wait for what the future has to bring. Maybe SSC might crank up the boost to go faster, or the jesko will hit a new record. maybe the Chrion SS can do it both ways. Or henessey comes out and kills it. The future is bright and i cant wait to see(im putting my money on koenigsegg, but henenssey is not far behind)

  • I understand that SSC was dishonest, especially with the clear cut evidence. However, it the Tuatara did 282 mph in only 2.2 miles, leaving about a mile to stop. The Bugatti Chiron super sport 300+ Had the whole nardo. I’d like to see what the venom f5 and Tuatara could do at the nardo with aero and gear ratio adjustments. I would be worried about the tuatara as that car has shown itself to be very unstable at high speeds, probably due to aero. The f5 is still unknown.

    • SSC lied about going 331mph. They EDITED a video but most importantly, because this shows INTENT, they lied about having the data confirmed by the measurement supplier, ["Austrian company Dewetron has said it was not directly involved in SSC's claimed 331mph run, despite claims in a press release from the latter"]. SSC has been claiming the car drove 331mph until a few days ago, they even had the video up al this time where SSC falsely but Officially claimed the production car speed record with 331mph. Now the 331mph video is removed. What happened? Robert Mitchell said this publicly: "Under no circumstances has this car ever gone faster than the 286.1 miles an hour than it did in this run." If it was up to SSC they would now have the record with 331mph and the investors would be lining their pockets. Thats more than enough motive to carry out such a dastardly plan.
